I was thrilled to see my contributions in the article Let Your Office Creativity Fly Free. Thankfully I refrained myself from standing up in my sit during busy rush hour, pointing to the article, yelling, Thats me! Thats me! Although who am I kidding New Yorkers wouldnt bat an eye over craziness like that! Third up is the new weekly video on Spring! Were posting a new meaty, juicy video every Tuesday in February instead of one humongous, time-consuming one, so far the response has been awesome. This week, we talk about how to find your support system (both online off), how to ask for support,   what to do with those supporters who dont reciprocate, even a personal ( scary!) challenge from Jess LC. And we have a new giveaway! So carve a half-hour into your busy day for some support time watch here! Fourth up (Whew! How do I sleep?) is my interview on The Sweet Unfolding! I love that its called Encouraging Words. Just about sums it up. Aw.

Why Didnt I Get Called Back for the Job - Work It Daily

Why Didnt I Get Called Back for the Job - Work It Daily The production company receptionist who can’t be bothered to answer a few questions about project submissions? The film production supervisor who won’t return your call about available positions? The agency that sends your screenplay back unread? The below-the-line agent who never gets around to watching your DP reel? Here are the things you’ll never know… The production company receptionist is a frustrated screenwriter herself, and she’s got nineteen phone lines to answer. Plus, Ryan Gosling just walked through the lobby and she didn't even get to see him. The supervisor of that film you want to work on is being innundated by calls from the nephew of one of the studio executives and he’ll get the open PA job for sure, even though she can already tell he’s going to be trouble. The agency that sent your screenplay back unread, like most agencies and production companies and all of the major studios, fears nothing more than being sued because your screenplay bore some resemblance to a project they already have in development. They didn’t even look at the cover page, much less flip it open. The below-the-line agent who never got around to watching your DP reel? â€" Oh wait, he just called. He liked your reel and wants to meet in person! Sometimes people are helpful. Sometimes they are not. When they are not, move on. Don’t take it personally and don’t look back. How to Overcome Social Anxiety

How to Overcome Social Anxiety If you suffer from social anxiety, you know how debilitating it can be. People who suffer from anxiety disorders of any type (generalized anxiety disorder and many others) often have trouble dealing with situations that other people might find neutral or even enjoyable. Socially anxious people do leid just shy away from social situations because they find them exhausting, as many introverts do they may find social situations so terrifying that they suffer crippling anxiety symptoms, such as panic attacks, which can take a severe toll on their mental health, professional life, and personal life. Attending an event, going to a festivitt, sitting in on or participating in a meeting, or even meeting a friend for dinner can lead them down a fear spiral and provoke anxious thoughts.According to the Social Anxiety Institute, social anxiety is defined as the fear of being judged and evaluated negatively by other people, leading to feelings of inadequacy, inferi ority, self-consciousness, embarrassment, humiliation, and depression. The Institute also identifies social anxiety disorder as the third largest psychological disorder in the United States. So if you have social anxiety disorder, you are not alone many other Americans and people around the world experience the saatkorn struggle with everyday interactions and situations.People who suffer from social anxiety disorders often experience a feeling of great distress when faced with a range of situations such as Meeting or being introduced to other people, particularly important or influential people Facing criticism or ridicule Being the center of attention Public speaking or performancesor being observed or watched in any way Social encounters of any kind, particularly involving strangers Relationships with others, both friendships and romantic relationshipsThey may find other situations challenging as well. While fruchtwein people who suffer from a social anxiety disorder understand that their fear is largely irrational, they cant help feeling how they feel and having the irrational thoughts and physical symptomssuch as racing heart, fight-or-flight response, sweating, or other physical symptomsthat often accompany their disorder. In professional situations, having a social anxiety disorder can feel especially debilitating. How do you overcome your extreme shyness to showcase your strengths in an interview, for instance, if you are always afraid of what the hiring manager is going to think about you or that youll make a faux pas? What are you supposed to do at networking events, where youre faced with having to intereact with strangers for hours on end? Will your phobia prevent you from making a good impression?Throughout your professional life, you are going to have numerous encounters with colleagues and strangers alike. Advancing in your career will require you to tackle your problem head on, because daily panic attacks that result from your fear of meeting and i nteracting with new people will almost certainly get in the way of your work and ability to thrive in your role.So how do you develop coping techniques for dealing with your social anxiety and getting past your shyness and phobia of interacting with other people? While social anxiety disorder can be difficult to overcome, the good news is that many treatments have proven very effective in helping people who suffer from a social anxiety disorder. There is a great deal of evidence to suggest that these changes having lasting or permanent effects on peoples lives.Read on for five strategies that can help you overcome your disorder once and for all.1. See a cognitive behavioral therapist. Most of the treatments well discuss further are practices of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), which involves using evidence-based practices to improve mental health and help individuals develop coping skills and strategies. Therapists who practice CBT use different strategies to help individuals who s uffer from anxiety and depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD),substance abuse, eating disorders, and, sometimes, borderline personality disorder. It may be used in conjunction with psychotropic medications for these disorders and others, including obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), major depressive disorder, opioid addiction, bipolar, and many other mental health problems. If youre socially anxious to the point at which you find your anxiety symptoms debilitating (in other words they are negatively impacting your life), your first step is to seek the help of a mental health professional. She will likely recommend a series of techniques, which well describe in greater detail below, for overcoming your negative thoughts and reactions when you are faced with a social interaction. She will also work with you to develop social skills to help you handle the situations that make you feel anxious or afraid.2. Focus your attention outward.People who fear social interaction and pan ic at the idea of having to engage with other people or in group settings spend the majority of their thoughts and attention focused inward on their own behavior and how others are perceiving them. This leaves them feeling exhausted and unable to exhibit their own social skills, because they are so worried about what could go wrong. This is a vicious cycle, because worrying too much about everything that could go wrong can lead to things actually going wrong your lack of self-confidence makes it impossible to think about anything else and engage in a social scenario. So how do you fight your response? By actually overcoming your negative thoughts. Turn your attention outward think about what is ging on around you, rather than what is going on in your own head. Rather than examining yourself, focus your attention on the other person. Nobody is asking you to get on the stage for a public speaking event just try to have an engaging, friendly conversation with another person. It is also a good idea to familiarize yourself with the cognitive distortions that you may be experiencing. Some common cognitive distortionspatterns of distorted thinkinginclude Filtering magnifying the negative aspects of a situation while ignoring the positive aspects Polarized thinking Ignoring shades of gray thinking situations are black and white or all or nothing Overgeneralization jumping to conclusions based on a single incident Catastrophizing inflating the importance of insignificant events or circumstances Personalization assuming that everything other people do is an attack on you or taking responsibility for something that is not your fault Emotional reasoning feeling like your emotions represent the truth of the situation if you feel it, it must be trueWhen you learn to recognize these and other emotional distortions, you can begin to challenge them. Start paying attention to and labeling your thoughts, so you become aware of the types of cognitive distortions you perform. For in stance, if you are at a party and spill your drink, you might immediately think, Ive ruined everything. Now everyone hates me, and theyll never want to have me over again. A quick scan of your list of cognitive distortions would lead you to realize that youre catastrophizing inflating the important of a minor eventspilling your drinkwhich is really just a minor inconvience that other people will forget quickly.Once you know how to label these events, you may soon realize that the patterns of thinking going on in your head are really just thatpatterns of thinkingrather than actuality or reality. This can be a useful way of overcoming your fear of interacting with others and engaging in group events or situations, since you know that your thoughts are not equivalent with facts and reality they are just negative thoughts and expectations.3. Identify the situations that provoke the most fearand do the things that make you anxious. If you experience social anxiety, you may have developed avoidance behaviorsavoiding, for instance, going to party or group setting because you imagine the worst-case scenario will play out. In not attending these events, you are actually rewarding yourself for avoiding the situation and reinforcing your own behavior.Make a list of your triggering experiences, and rate the level of anxiety each event provokes. For instance, going to a party might provoke a lot of anxiety and fear in you, so you might rate that a nine. Meanwhile, going to a family dinner may cause you a little apprehension, but not as much as an event in which you are likely to encounter strangers, so you would rate that a three. Then, test out your ratings. Force yourself to be in the situations you most fear, but think about your level of anxiety while your in them. Be very specific when predicting your how much anxiety a particular event will provoke you may find that they do not give you nearly as much anxiety as you suspected.Next, you need to elimnate your safety beha viors, the behaviors you cling to to cope with your own anxiety. For instance, you might avoid eye contact, drink to much, or keep your arms crossed. Pay attention to what youre doing to cope with your behavior, and then challenge yourself to eliminate them altogether. Finally, face your fears. Do the things that provoke your anxiety. Force yourself to engage in situations that make you uncomfortable. Every time you do iteven if it doesnt go well, or you dont like doing itreward yourself. You have faced your fear head on you deserve a reward.4. Practice mindfulness.Though not specifically a practice of cognitive-behavioral therapyalthough many CBT practitioners have begun dabbling with meditiation and mindfulness practicesmindfulness can be an effective coping mechanism for managing a range of mental health problems, including anxiety and depression, as well as social anxiety.Mindfulness involves using and paying attention to all of your senses. Rather than thinking about how particu lar experiences and thoughts relate to or impact you, let them come and go. Deep breathing, and paying attention to your breathing, are other aspects of mindfulness. The idea is to take your mind off of negative thoughts and anxiety-provoking experiences, and instead take your thoughts as they come and go.Practicing mindfulness can also help you pay more attention to your surroundings, rather than your personal situation and self. You might notice sights, sounds, and smells, rather than your anxious thoughts.Mindfulness requires a great deal of practice and patience, so dont be discouraged if your social anxiety doesnt immediately dissipate after one session of relaxation and deep breathing. Keep going and doing it every day.If you are having trouble getting started with mindfulness techniques on your own, try using a guided mediation, attending a class, practicing with a friend, or asking your therapist to work with you on mindfulness practices.5. Practice self-soothing and self-co mpassion.Be nice to yourself. Your social anxiety is not your fault, and you should berate or be mean to yourself if you are unable to conquer or defeat it at first. If you have a difficult experience, practice self-soothing techniques. People find comfort from different people, experiences, places, or things. Identify what brings you joy and makes you feel calm. For example, you might gain clarity and feel better after a long walk. Perhaps playing with your dog helps you feel more at peace. Maybe eating a bowl of your favorite flavor of ice cream brings you satisfacion. Or perhaps you can always lose yourself in a good book. When you find yourself in an upsetting situation, give yourself a break. Do something that will help you relax and find peace, even if it is just momentary relief. These small moments of relaxation can give you energy and support through difficult situations and experiences. It is also important to be kind to yourself during setbacks. If you full intended to go to a party but, plagued by the what-ifs, just could not will yourself to go at the last minute and sat on the couch watching TV instead, dont be too hard on yourself. You will have other chances to face your fears. Its okay to make mistakes sometimes, and its okay to have setbacks.

The grad stats are out - and here are the biggest earners

The grad stats are out - and here are the biggest earners The grad stats are out and here are the biggest earnersPosted July 30, 2014, by Marni Williams Graduate Careers Australias annual Australian Graduate Survey results were released last night with good news for student satisfaction, cowboyfilm Australians and health graduates. Heres a quick run down. Employment for graduates has slowed In 2013, 71.3 per cent of new bachelor degree graduates who entered the full-time labour market had found a full-time punkt within four months of completing their course. This is down from 76.1 per cent in 2012, but of the general labour force, just 3.4 per cent of bachelor degree graduates were unemployed, which is 4.4 per cent lower than graduates without post-school qualifications. But starting salaries are slightly higher, especially for women The average starting salary went up from $52,000 a year to $52,500. While that doesnt equate to much more than a couple of nice meals, this change was mainly due to an increase in the female median starting salary, which went up by $1,600 from 2012 to reach $51,600, while the male median was unchanged at $55,000. Top earners straight out of university Dentistry ($80,000) Optometry ($70,000) Engineering ($64,000) Medicine ($60,000) Earth sciences ($60,000) Grad salaries by state Graduates in Western Australia had the highest median starting salary, followed by the ACT and the Northern Territory. Victorian graduates earned the least. And the students are satisfied With a huge 93.9 per cent of bachelor degree graduates expressing broad satisfaction with their higher education experience, it seems that the slow employment on graduation doesnt tarnish their outlook. And with over 182,000 invited to respond and 109,000 making the effort, we can certainly see that as a significant tick of approval from Australias student population. Now, we just need to make sure they heed this message from GCA Executive Director, Dr Noel Edge Al l our research shows that unemployment is not a long-term concern for graduates and its important to understand that getting a degree is not just about the first job after university its about a life-time of advantage in the labour market as well as the potential for huge personal growth. We couldnt have said it better ourselves, Dr Edge. Think a life-time of advantage sounds appealing? Take a look at some online coursesand get ahead. How to Break Out of the Local Music Scene Trap

How to Break Out of the Local Music Scene TrapHow to Break Out of the Local Music Scene TrapAre you enjoying success in your local music scene, but want to break out? Ifyou want to make a living in music, you have to approach things quite differently from the band who simply wants to play some songs and have a party at the local bar on the weekends. You need to think of how to take your local successes to the next level, and that requires some planning and smart decision making. Before we start talking about the local music scene trap, lets acknowledge that its leid a trap everyone wants to escape. Its perfectly fine to enjoy making music without making it your career, and many people are satisfied with local success. But if you yearn for more, you need to take extra steps. Local Music Scene Blues A lot of people think that living in a town that lacks a strong music scene can ruin their chances of launching their music career. And, lets be honest, it can make things tough. Howeve r, living in a city with a thriving local music scene has its pitfalls too. To get the most out of living somewhere with a strong music scene, you need to find a way to tap into the benefits while cutting through the distractions. The Good and the Bad of Local Fans Yes, part of succeeding as a musician beyond your local scene is to stop worrying about courting the admiration and attention of your lovely and fickle local scenesters and hobby musicians. You know who I mean. They might get the local overpriced coffeehouse buzzing about you, but they wont help you sell records even three towns over. Heres the hard - and harsh - reality of it all being a local celebrity plus a couple bucks will get you a latte and not much else. Besides, ansicht people are often the same people who will think youre a sellout if you try to make some money selling your musicbecause after all, their band doesnt make any money and they dont care. Heres a hint - they have day jobs and they never plan to l eave them for a career in music. You do. Dont get sucked into it. Although you will naturally have an affinity and a fondness for your hometown fans - after all, your friends and family are usually in that group - from a business standpoint, you need to treat your local scene as you would any other stop on the road. You want to heidewitzka your fans, get some press and keep people talking about your music - and then you want to repeat that process on the next stop on your tour. Local Stardom Doesnt Travel Local bands in places where there are big music scenes often invest an inordinate amount of time trying to become the stars of their local circuit. There is the odd occasion when this can make a difference - if a few bands who have made it big come from your town, labels often invade the town to see who else is around - but these occasions are very specific and very fleeting. In most cases, you can put the local scene on lockdown and still be lucky to land an opener for the ope ner slot at a small club in the next state, simply because your local success doesnt translate outside your small radius. If getting out of your backyard is your ultimate goal, then dont get involved in a popularity contest to rule said backyard. Believe me, your local celebrity status will be cemented when you start achieving things on a larger stage anyway, plus, youll get to avoid turning into the middle age wannabe musician saddo hanging around the college parties wishing the local scene was just like the...90s, 80s, 70s, or what have you...again, since that is when they ruled the local clubs. 3 Key Tips to Avoid the Local Music Scene Trap OK, but here is the rub. It DOES make sense to start locally when building your music career. It all comes down to the approach. Here are some tips to avoid the local musician trap Follow the Bread Crumb Trail Everything you do locally can be a stepping stone for something bigger. Follow that trail to opportunities beyond the local scene. If youve got a good local following, try a gig swap to start working on anew audience. If youve got tons of great reviews in the local press, add quotes from them to your bio and your website. Press begets press, so demonstrating that people are writing about you will get more people to write about you outside of your area. It will also show promoters, labels and more that youre building a buzz. Always look for how every local success can help you achieve something a little broader. Plan Wisely When youre booking shows, check the local calendar. Its amazing how many relatively small towns seem to have 25 very similar bands playing on the same night. Theyre splitting the audience in ways that just dont make sense. Since your goal is to move beyond playing locally, you want to play on nights when youre not splitting the local music fans so many ways.Be on the Same Page One of the best parts about being in a place with a big music scene is that you lots of options when it comes to find ing musicians for your band. However, in addition to being great musicians, the people you play with need to have the same goals as you. If they want to stay local and cant invest the time into, say, going on tour, then youre going to reach an impasse. Start out on the same page, and youll avoid these problems. Local music scenes can fun and great places to launch your music career. But if your goal is to make a career out of your music, remember youre going to need a lot more than local success.
